A series of system crashes affecting Google, Amazon, Apple and Microsoft in the past fortnight has brought warnings that governments, banks and big business are over-reliant on computer networks that have become too complex.

Super Metroid is an awesome game. Playing as the female bounty hunter Samus Aran, you explore the planet Zebes looking for the stolen Metroid. Samus is equipped with an upgradable gun and map she uses to explore the labyrinth of Zebes.

Memorizing the entire world of Zebes might but possible but to me it seems like the stretch.  The game has you constantly referring to your map to look for any unexplored regions. As you explore the enemies get more and more difficult so you are constantly on the look out for upgrades to your power suit.  Many times I thought there was a flaw in the design of the game where I got stuck without having the item needed to progress, only to find out I was not looking hard enough. This is the real challenge of Super Metroid, being thorough and observant to your surroundings.

The music in the game is some of the most memorable and atmospheric music that has been accompanied to a game. While not all of the music is in the foreground, the songs that are propel the pacing of the game and subtly encourage the player to explore the environment. The game also uses music consistently to clue the player on when to hunt for items in a given area. It does not get much better than the Brinstar Underground Depths music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zk7TGDmdt2U).

As you explore planet Zebes your are getting more and more powerful. Of course, as you get more powerful the danger around you increases. The more items you find, the easier the later bosses will be for you. I managed to only find 61% of the items in the game. I needed to retry Ridley and Mother Brain a few times before I was able to be them.

One of the fantastic designs of the game is encouraging exploration but not requiring it. This gives the player total control over the pace and difficulty of the game. You also always have a way out of a situation if you find yourself under prepared. The one possible exception to this is the charge beam. If you do not find this item early in the game you will not be able to damage bosses unless you have lots of missiles.

Super Metroid is very clearly an homage to the Alien movies. The atmosphere and art design all seem like they are taking a note out of H.R. Giger’s notebook. Ridley is based on the Queen Alien design, not to mention the name. My favorite homage to the films is the escape the exploding space station trope. This game both begins and ends with Samus running through the maze as quickly as possible while a count down timer shows you how much longer you have to live. It is impressive that the game can ratchet up the tension even higher after fighting the very difficult final boss.
